Robert “Bob” Humes

1943 - 2011

Robert “Bob” Lee Humes, 68, of Lewes, passed away Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. A native Pennsylvanian, he was born in Philadelphia March 26, 1943, son of the late Lee and Helen Humes.

He was a graduate of Frankford High School. Bob attended Pennsylvania State University where he received a degree in labor management relations. He went on to complete graduate studies at Bucknell University where he received a master’s of science in business administration. Following college he served in the U.S. Army Adjutants General Corps as a 1st lieutenant from Jan. 1967 to May 1969.

Bob spent his professional career at IBM from 1969-2003 and was the recipient of numerous recognitions including the President's Award. In 2003, he opted for semi-retirement and relocated to Lewes so he could spend time with his wife close to the ocean. In his eight years in Lewes, he became deeply involved in the community and dedicated his tireless energy and love of history to volunteer at the Lewes Historical Society and the Lightship Overfalls Foundation. He was a valued member of the Lewes Yacht Club where he spent summers with his family.

Bob was also a talented musician who enjoyed playing the piano, singing, and writing lyrics to songs. He was also an athlete and coach to his sons in baseball and soccer.

He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen (Harrington) Humes; his oldest son Robert Lee Humes II and his wife Patricia and their three daughters Heather, Audrey, and Claire; his son David Harrington and his wife Leslie and their son Austin; his son Steven Lawrie and his partner Jose Paredes; as well as two grand-dogs, Charly and Primo; his in-laws Ann and Jim Lauer and children of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and his in-laws Margaret and Bob Hazlett and children of Wheeling, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held with the Rev. Jeffrey Ross officiating at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 1, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 1. Interment with military honors will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.
