Overfalls Family Program – Simple Machines

July 10 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

On Wednesday, July 10 beginning at 9:30 the Lightship Overfalls in conjunction with the Zwaanendael Museum will be offering its second family program of the season called “Levers, Pulleys, and Wedges: Oh My! Simple Machines Making Work Easier on the Lightship Overfalls”.

The program is free and open to children 5-12 years of age.

Learn about simple machines and the impact they have on our daily lives, and at sea. Children will learn about the 5 basic simple machines; wheel & axle, pulley, lever, inclined plane, and screw, and how they are used at home and on the lightship.  The Zwaanendael Museum will demonstrate a block and tackle and how simple machines, such as pullies, were used on 18th century ships.

Guest speaker Suzanne Ketchum will discuss the need for, and use of, simple machines on the Lightship Overfalls, as well as their use in our daily lives.  Ms. Ketchum is a certified teacher and retired educator with 35 years of classroom experience in New York State. She served for four years as an elementary school curriculum coordinator in science. She currently volunteers at Lightship Overfalls, The Lewes Library, and also tutors elementary-aged children.

In the event of bad weather, we will hold the event inside the ship but if needed, weather cancellations will be posted here along with our Facebook and Instagram pages.
