Planned Giving
The Overfalls Foundation offers planned giving opportunities to ensure the Lightship Overfalls is sustained for the future. Participants in the program will be designated Navigators and their generosity will be recognized and remembered.
The Overfalls Foundation has completed the nearly impossible task of turning a rust bucket in a muddy hole into a beautifully preserved ship in a setting worthy of the vessel and the crews who served aboard. Your planned gift, which costs you nothing during your lifetime, will build the Overfalls Foundation Endowment Fund and gives you the comfort of knowing that you have made a significant contribution toward preserving this treasure for future generations.
There are many ways to make a planned gift including (but not limited to) the following:
- A bequest in your will
- A beneficiary designation on a life insurance policy, 401K plan, or IRA
- A life income gift
- A charitable lead trust
A key person in this conversation should be your attorney or financial planner to ensure that, while your gift will sustain the ship, it will work in concert with your own personal financial needs.
Contact the treasurer at [email protected], or by clicking here, for help in making your gift. Thank you for considering joining us in this worthy cause.

Why Donate?
The Overfalls Foundation preserves and shares Delaware’s maritime history through the Overfalls Lightship Museum, which tells the story of lightship mariners protecting sailors and shipping throughout the Delaware Bay region, and the Monomoy lifeboat, which was initially designed to save sailors and merchant marines in the treacherous Battle of the Atlantic during World War II.. Support from our members, volunteers, donors, and community helps keep these historic resources accessible for future generations.
Your gift may be used in support of day-to-day operations, maintain our floating and land-based assets, promote community-wide events such as the annual Anchor Drops, and support youth-oriented programs such as Fishin’ Kids, Sail Away Day, and Why Knot Day. We offer scholarships to Sussex County graduating seniors who study the maritime sciences.
Join us as we engage in performing our mission of preserving our floating and land-based assets and educating our visitors about the history of lightships through the Lightship Overfalls, Monomoy Lifeboat, and Overfalls Lightship Museum.
