Charitable IRA Giving

If you are over 70 ½ years of age, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your IRA to a qualified 501(c)(3) charity such as the Overfalls Foundation, with the amount excluded from your gross income and, if applicable, counted toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). The money must go from your IRA custodian (trustee) directly to the Overfalls Foundation without passing through your bank account.  The distribution is not included in your adjusted gross income (AGI), which can lower your taxable income, Social Security taxable benefits, and certain Medicare premiums.  If you are age 73 or older, a Qualified Charitable Distribution can satisfy your RMD for the year.  In 2026 the limit is $111,000 for a single individual and $222,000 per couple per calendar year.

To learn more about the advantages of charitable donations, speak with your tax advisor or investment counselor.  Request an IRA charitable rollover check payable to The Overalls Foundation. We offer sample letters, formatted in MS Word and PDF, to your IRA Administrator to initiate a donation.

A Qualified Charitable Distribution is a powerful tool for retirees who want to support the Overfalls Foundation, reduce taxable income, and meet RMDs — all in one direct transfer.

Why Donate?

The Overfalls Foundation preserves and shares Delaware’s maritime history through the Overfalls Lightship Museum, which tells the story of lightship mariners protecting  sailors and shipping throughout the Delaware Bay region, and the Monomoy lifeboat, which was initially designed to save sailors and merchant marines in the treacherous Battle of the Atlantic during World War II.. Support from our members, volunteers, donors, and community helps keep these historic resources accessible for future generations.

Your gift may be used in support of day-to-day operations, maintain our floating and land-based assets, promote community-wide events such as the annual Anchor Drops, and support youth-oriented programs such as Fishin’ Kids, Sail Away Day, and Why Knot Day.  We offer scholarships to Sussex County graduating seniors who study the maritime sciences.

Join us as we engage in performing our mission of preserving our floating and land-based assets and educating our visitors about the history of lightships through the Lightship Overfalls, Monomoy Lifeboat, and Overfalls Lightship Museum.
